The Murray cod is the largest freshwater fish in Australia, growing to 6 feet in length and more than 200 lb. As a result of over-fishing, habitat destruction, and salinity in its natural range in the Murray Darling basin, the species is listed as vulnerable. Commercial fishing for wild stocks ceased in 2000 with demand for the species now met by aquaculture.
