Photographer Shawn Connell spent the past year photographing birds at sanctuaries and rehab facilities throughout North America. Influenced by the beauty, power, and diversity seen in the faces of these large birds, these portraits showcase every detail of the feathers, eyes, and beaks, allowing for unparalleled intimacy with each bird.
Description
The Bateleur Eagle, a threatened bird living mainly in the open woodlands and tree savannas of Africa south of the Sahara, is believed to be good luck if it flies over natives’ houses or villages. These eagles are mainly silent and hunt carrion, the decaying flesh of dead animals, as well as reptiles, mammals, and small birds. Most interestingly, its feet and facial color change from pale to brilliant red depending on their mood.
