Description

The Bald Eagle, a national symbol of the United States since 1782, live mainly in rivers, lakes, and coastal areas across most of North America. Recently, special programs and conservation efforts have increased their populations after they became endangered in the 70s from pesticide use. Their wingspans can range anywhere from 5.8 feet to 7.5 feet, and they get most of their food by stealing other creatures’ catches, known as piracy, sometimes directly from their talons.

Description

The Rough-Legged Hawk is found mainly in the arctic and subarctic regions of North America and Eurasia, migrating south in winter. They are one of the few large birds of prey known to regularly hover and feed on lemmings, voles, and small mammals and birds. A vole, a small rodent and relative of the mouse, leaves a runway marked with feces and urine only detectable by ultraviolet light. There is evidence that rough-legged hawks are able to see the ultraviolet range and quickly scan large areas to determine vole populations.

Description

Since 1952, there have been no sightings of wild Aplomado Falcons breeding pairs, and they are the last falcon still currently on the list of Endangered Species in the United States. Only recently, in the 1990s, have reintroduction efforts helped create a new breeding population in southern Texas. These birds have a smaller wingspan of 2.5 to 3 feet and prey mostly on birds, but also bats and insects. Pairs or family groups will often hunt together to push prey out of hiding places as well as steal prey from other raptors by harassing them until they drop it.

Description

The Golden Eagle is a large bird with a wingspan of 6 to 7 feet that lives in mid-Canada down into Mexico, west from Colorado to the Pacific Ocean, as well as the extreme Northeast like Nova Scotia. They can live up to 38 years in the wild preying on rabbits, groundhogs, prairie dogs, turkey, and smaller raptors. Golden Eagles are notoriously disliked by farmers because they believe these eagles prey on their livestock, however they often are removing the already dead members of the herd, known as carrion, or dead decaying flesh.
